I serve for Korean-American Science and Engineering Association at A&M as an advisor (KSEA-TAMU). Every semester, KSEA-TAMU provides seminars on career development in academia and industry and successful undergraduate/graduate lives since September 2017.
On Nov 3rd, 2018, KSEA-TAMU hosted a Career Development Forum at Memorial Student Center (MSC) with supports from Korean government and Korean consulate general in Houston. About 150 international/domestic students and postdocs and professionals attended the event. Among them, about 30 speakers gave talks on career developments in academia, industry and start-up company. Dr. Anand gave a welcoming message representing TAMU and Dr. Hubbard gave a Keynote speech inspiring science and engineering students and postdocs.
The following topics were covered.
Career development in industry, intellectual property, start-up
Career development in academia, how to write successful grant, strategies for successful graduate students/postdocs
Practical tips, how to negotiate salary, resume building, career fair preparation, case studies
From our department, I also invited Dr. Tai (grant writing), Dr. Ryu (postdoc strategy), and Dr. Lee (postdoc strategy). Among the participants, 1/3 were non-Korean/non-American people. Participants commented that the event was extremely beneficial and they wanted to have more events of this kind in the future.
